Abstract
The women whose voices come through these pages lead ordinary lives in their societies. They perceive themselves as powerless and, in terms of the wider political systems, must be seen as relatively so. In all of these cases, they were caught up in political conflict, sometimes with shattering violence. These chapters document their responses to situations varying from brutal war, experienced by Greek Cypriot women during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and by Palestinian women in Beirut, to the relatively benign case (however fierce the local battles) of Breton women involved in issues of ethnicity and self-identification.
