Consolidation and Advance: 22–29 May

  • Chapter
The Media and the Falklands Campaign

Abstract

The main British landing at San Carlos — codenamed Operation Sutton — began at about 4 a.m. local time — about 8 a.m. in the UK. The troops were ashore when, soon after full light, the air attacks began. The first raid was by four Pucara aircraft which unsuccessfully attacked 2 Para; two aircraft were shot down. Later a single Aeromacchi, possibly a reconnaissance flight, hit HMS Argonaut with cannon fire. Then began the massed air attack which was to last six hours and cost the British one ship, HMS Ardent lost and four others damaged, two by unexploded bombs.
