David Ricardo’s Treatment of Wages

Abstract

To anyone unacquainted with Ricardo-scholarship, it may seem odd that the writings of a man who died in 1823 should continue to be the focus for lively and sometimes acrimonious debate. Yet the fact is that Ricardo’s ‘legacy’ attracts unflagging interest (as a recently published book on the subject — Caravale (ed.) 1985 — bears witness). How can this be explained? I suggest that two factors are particularly germane: interpretative method and the evaluative location of Ricardo within some ‘stream’ of economic thought.
