Abstract
In the communist world and indeed the world as a whole, Yugoslavia has an importance far beyond what one would expect of a country of its size and economic strength. This is due to various interrelated factors most of which derive from Yugoslavia’s position, precariously poised between East and West. These factors include the remarkable resistance movement of World War II, the successful defiance by its leaders of Stalin, its leading role in the non-aligned movement and its bold socio-political model known as self-management.
