Abstract
As it was difficult to make a start on this book, so now it is equally difficult to conclude the first part. By looking at some of the issues that affect our functioning as practitioners, and people, and by discussing some issues that affect profoundly handicapped people themselves, I have tried to get in touch with some of the feelings involved. We will be ineffective in our work if we ignore what is going on within ourselves. But having insight into how we feel will make our work much easier — not physically, but psychologically. If we can be at peace, then this is something that we can easily transfer to those in our care.
