Abstract

The intention of this introductory chapter is to provide an overview of the context in which this book has been conceived and written. In addition to presenting details of the origins and development of the research project, it also identifies both major themes and points of divergence with current traditions within mainstream social science and Marxism. These are discussed particularly with regard to the relationship between research and political practice.
