Abstract

You can hardly avoid index numbers — scarcely a day goes by without some mention of them on the TV news, or in the daily papers. The movements of the Stock Exchange are reported from London by the Financial Times Share Index, or from New York by the Dow Jones Average. Changes in the cost of living are reported once a month, when the latest value of the Retail Price Index (UK) is published.
