Abstract
The implications of the current industrial restructuring for economic and social change provide the thematic focus of this book. It is now generally recognized that the 1980s have witnessed, and will continue to witness, a major transformation of the economic and social structure of all of the advanced capitalist societies. Moreover, this process is seen to be a fundamental restructuring of these societies and not — whatever the commonly-offered rhetoric on these matters — a simple recession. These are major changes, not temporary phenomena, and there will be no ‘return to normal’ should the general level of economic activity recover. In turn they have presented social scientists with a new research agenda, both theoretical and empirical. The chapters of this book go some way towards exploring this.
