Abstract

Historically the most notable of British newspaper proprietors have been Lord Northcliffe of the Daily Mail, Lord Beaver-brook of the Daily Express, John Walter of The Times and C. P. Scott of the Manchester Guardian. The public service philosophy of John Walter and C. P. Scott lives on in their papers; it is echoed in the surviving ethos of John Reith’s BBC and in the news output of British independent television. Northcliffe and Beaverbrook by contrast were commercial profit-seekers, politically partisan, original in their journalism, and immensely powerful individuals.
