Abstract
In a famous passage in his Sketchbook 1946–1949 Max Frisch quotes approvingly Henrik Ibsen’s dictum: ‘I am here to ask questions, not to give answers.’ Frisch goes on:
As a playwright I should consider my task completely fulfilled if one of my plays ever succeeded in posing a question in such a way that the audience from that point on were unable to live without an answer — their very own answer, one which they could only give within the context of their own lives.
