Abstract

The importance of leadership to the smooth operation of large or relatively small organizations is not underestimated in the world at large. Leaders often receive recognition in terms of cash and materialistic rewards, they enjoy greater status and they are usually surrounded by symbols and embellishments which are intended to distinguish them from their followers. This key role of social and organizational life is reflected in the wealth of research which social scientists have undertaken in order to ascertain what constitutes effective leadership.
