Abstract

The French Fifth Republic was set up in 1958 during a few hectic months which saw in quick succession:

  1. 1

the collapse of the Fourth Republic when the possibility of a significant modification of the constitutional rules by which it had operated was accepted (3 June).

  2. 2

the drafting of a new Constitution, its approval by the people in a referendum (28 September), and its promulgation (4 October).

  3. 3

the election of parliamentary assemblies under the new Constitution: National Assembly (23 and 30 November), Senate (26 April 1959).

  4. 4

the election of a President of the Republic — Charles de Gaulle (21 December 1958).
