Abstract

About hermits there was a traditional view: their way of life was to be revered, they themselves were to be suspected because of the absence of any check over their activities. This criticism could not be applied with the same justice to the new communities of hermits since by living under a leader they were deliberately trying to avoid the ‘arbitrary’ self-regulated life. It must, however, be asked whether contemporaries recognised this difference and if they did how they judged the new movement.
