Abstract

Legend has it that a proximate cause of Britain’s poor performance in the market place since the Second World War has been the condemnation of our industry and commerce to existence on an ideological see-saw. For five years Labour reigns, and nationalises everything that moves. Then for five years Tories rule, and sell off all that Labour has acquired. Then for five years Labour returns, and the trend is once again reversed.
