1931–1933 The Webbs in Russia

‘A new civilisation with a new metaphysic.’

  • Chapter
Beatrice and Sidney Webb

Abstract

With the formation of the National government and its subsequent crushing victory in the October election, Sidney’s active involvement in politics ended. It would have been entirely understandable if the Webbs, now both in their mid-seventies, had accepted a life of quiet retirement at Passfield Corner. Instead, following their visit to Russia in 1932, they wrote their long and highly controversial study of the Soviet system, Soviet Communism: a New Civilisation?, published in 1935.
