Abstract

As the computer approaches its fortieth birthday it is interesting to look back briefly at its birth, growth and development. The computer was born at a time when the world was in the chaos of the Second World War. The young computer had limited capabilities. It was large, very heavy and generated an enormous amount of heat. It required constant attention from dedicated teams of technicians.
