Radiological Protection in Transport

  • Robert Barker

Abstract

Since 1959 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been the leader in establishing international regulations for radiation safety in transportation of all radioactive materials. I will discuss the safety requirements in the Agency’s regulations for the transport of irradiated fuel and the procedures by which they are made applicable to such shipments. I will also review the record of safety in transport and some predictions of assessments in support of the conclusion that the safety measures being taken in transport of irradiated fuel are adequate.
