Safety Problems and Government Regulations in the US

  • Fred Millar

Abstract

In promoting a new generation of US-design pressurised water (PWR) nuclear reactors, the UK atomic energy establishment seemingly wants to assert both that the UK operation of these will be safer than the (‘cowboy’?) American PWR system and that the massive US commitment to PWR technology has meant that most of the problems in the system have been corrected. Evidence from the US experience with the regulation of nuclear waste transportation bears out neither of these assertions.
