Abstract

The transportation of irradiated fuel in France is carried out within the terms of the international regulations, particularly with regard to the safety of packaging. The French situation may, however, differ from that of other countries, in particular in that of administrative structure, the present and future volume of these shipments, and the perception of nuclear risk by the public. The most significant point is probably the rapid development of a nuclear industry involving the reprocessing of irradiated fuels, which necessitated the recent reinforcement of physical protection measures against acts of sabotage, and intervention measures in the event of accidents of a radiological nature.
