Abstract

A major theme in the previous section was the way in which international processes and relations have made some kinds of development in the Middle East more difficult while facilitating other kinds. But it cannot be stressed too often that the course of development in particular countries is not a simple function of the international system, however sophisticated our understanding of the economic, political and cultural dimensions of such a system might be. In this Part, therefore, the texts focus on various aspects of the state in the Middle East, and especially on some of its internal tendencies and contradictions. These texts introduce a number of important questions about “internal” conditions of development. But we must try in each case to see these conditions not merely as forms of “inadequate development” (where this is measured against some ideal type of “modernity”), but as forms of politics and economics which have their own social logic.
