Abstract
The crops which are described in the following pages are of mixed origins and, for this reason, the title Vegetables in the Tropics has been adopted to avoid any implication that only crops of tropical origin have been included. The origins of many crops can be traced to various parts of Europe as well as to Asia, Africa and South America. In general terms, the range of latitude within which such crops are grown varies from 20° North and South of the Equator. A very useful source of reference to the origins of widely grown food crops is Simmonds (1976); Grubben (1977) has given a brief review of the centres of diversity of some important vegetables.
