Abstract

The recent political history of Latin America has been characterised by frequent violent upheavals. From 1963 to 1979 coups have occurred in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Nicaragua. There has also been a marked increase in both left- and right-wing violence throughout the continent. The most recent examples are El Salvador and Guatemala.

We are indebted to Alistair Meese for his invaluable comments, Tom Head and Edward Taylor for their devoted and imaginative research assistance, to Maureen Kilkenny for drawing the graphs, and to the Word Processing Unit for typing the numerous earlier drafts.
