The procrustean ideal: libertarians v. egalitarians

Abstract

Let me begin by distinguishing some different interpretations of equality. For not every ideal of equality constitutes a threat to liberty. On the contrary: the most fundamental of these ideals is itself essentially connected with respecting every individual’s rights to choose, in as many respects as it practically consistent with the corresponding equal rights of everyone else.
