Abstract

Mooney’s Mail Order House has been in business for the past twenty years. Customers are sent a glossy catalogue twice a year displaying a range of goods including clothing for the whole family, furniture for every room in the house, consumer durables of all types, jewellery, sports goods, gardening requisites and toys, etc. The appeal of this form of selling is that the customers do not need to leave their homes to do their shopping. No deposit is required on the purchase and payment can be spread over twenty weeks or longer in the case of more expensive purchases. No interest is payable during this period of credit. A further feature is that account holders/agents are given a 10% commission on the sale of goods over the total value of £100 in any calendar year. It is intended that office and factory workers will show the catalogue to their workmates and that housewives will do the same to their friends and neighbours.
