Abstract
This book is an introduction to German drama as represented by the Austrians Peter Handke and Thomas Bernhard; East Germans Heiner Müller and Thomas Brasch; and West Germans Franz Xaver Kroetz, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Botho Strauss. For convenience the usual adjective ‘German’ will be used to describe the work of all the playwrights. Specifics of nationality will be dealt with where they add to an understanding of the work; for example, the linguistic and romantic tradition in Austria; regionalism in Kroetz; non-Western aspects of the East Germans’ plays.
