Abstract

From Some Literary Recollections (1884) pp. 223–33. Payn (1830–98), novelist and journalist, educated at Eton and Cambridge, made his mark in journalism in Dickens’s Household Words and Chambers’s Journal, which he edited 1859–74; later he edited the Cornhill, 1883–96. He had some slight acquaintance with Thackeray in his later years.
