Payn (1830–98), novelist and journalist, educated at Eton and Cambridge, made his mark in journalism in Dickens’s Household Words and Chambers’s Journal, which he edited 1859–74; later he edited the Cornhill, 1883–96. He had some slight acquaintance with Thackeray in his later years.
