Abstract

The pattern of this chapter and of the two that follow differs from the rest of this book in that, instead of having the main part followed by a section drawing attention to matters of specific relevance to the teacher, theory and practice are linked together throughout. This is because the three topics concerned, that is, educational guidance and counselling, discipline and class control, and teacher personality, draw much of their research evidence from work done within the classroom, and we shall therefore find ourselves discussing the role of the teacher right from the outset.

Annotated reading

  • Rogers, C. (1951) Client Centred Therapy. London: Constable. One of the most valuable and influential books on counselling to appear since the war; the book could be said to have ushered in a new era in counselling, with the emphasis upon the part played by the client himself in solving his problems. The reader interested in counselling will enjoy the book, not only for the practical guidance it provides but for the humanity and sympathy that characterize it throughout.
