Annotated reading
Hadfield, J.A. (1979) Childhood and Adolescence. Harmondsworth: Penguin.
Sandstrom, C.I. (1968) Psychology of Childhood and Adolescence. Harmondsworth: Penguin. These cover both childhood and adolescence. The book by Hadfield is particularly useful for parents. The one by Sandstrom is a little dated though there is a revised edition from 1979.
Bower, T. (1977) Perceptual World of the Child. London: Fontana.
Garvey, C. (1977) Play. London: Fontana.
Donaldson, M. (1978) Children’s Minds. London: Fontana. These belong to a series of short books on children called The Developing Child’ and edited by Jerome Bruner, Michael Cole and Barbara Lloyd. The last of these three references is particularly good on cognitive growth and its relevance to education.
Turner, J. (1975) Cognitive Development. London: Methuen.
Green, J. (1974) Thinking and Language. London: Methuen. These are part of a series called ‘Essential Psychology’ and are particularly relevant.
Watson, R.I. and Lindgren, H.C. (1979) Psychology of the Child and the Adolescent (4th edn). New York: Collier Macmillan. This is an American book, but covers the non-American work well, and is slightly more advanced than the other suggested readings.
