Abstract
What sort of person was Anthony Trollope? Who was the creator of the Barsetshire and Palliser novels and so many other memorable works of Victorian fiction? The question is as difficult to answer as the more important one — what makes Trollope so engaging a writer? But the first question remains intriguing, and for most of his readers one that will not go away. My investigation will concentrate on contemporary accounts and reminiscences. But these must be seen in the context of the autobiographical aspects of his own writings.
