North Sea Oil: What Will Our Children Think?

Only a few years ago there was widespread hope, and even well-informed expectation, that the enormous oil discoveries in British waters would lead to an economic boom in the early 1980s and a lasting increase in per capita income. During 1978 and 1979 the national debate to settle how we should enjoy the largesse slowly gained momentum, only to subside into concern about our sharpest post-war depression: the new-found self-sufficiency in oil has not led to a golden era, and, as a consequence, has resulted in disenchantment and confusion.
