In the previous chapter we made a distinction between languages and language (1.2). Here we propose to consider at some length contacts be-tween the languages of Western and Eastern Europe and their degree of relatedness to each other. Then we will look briefly at some deeper similarities between languages, features which can be thought to underly language in general and distinguish man, as the possessor of this particular capacity for self-expression, from beast.
