Abstract

From Spring and All onwards Williams’s writing became highly diversified. He continued to write poems and improvisations, essays, reviews and plays, and he added to these novels, short stories and an opera libretto. The early 1920s seem to have been for him a period of considerable literary energy, although Reed Whittemore sees them as only a relative rise in a twelve-year long depression which continued from 1917 to 1929.1 year of this, 1927/28, was a period of agreed separation from Flossie, Mrs Williams, and in the background of A Voyage to Pagany exists a dark, savage-minded journal titled ‘Rome’, which Williams kept on his 1924 six-month European sabbatical.
