Abstract
In population terms the Soviet Union, with 265 million people (1980), ranks third in the world after the Chinese People’s Republic (835 million) and India (598 million). In relation to its area, however, the population is relatively modest: although it is twice the area of the USA, its population is little more than a fifth larger, and despite being ninety times the area of the United Kingdom, the population is not quite five times greater.
