Abstract

Investigators interested in bereavement have applied themselves to a number of questions. They have been variously concerned with sociological description and explanation, clinical features of ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ reactions, programmes for prevention, the relation between bereavement and other kinds of loss, and different cultural forms of mourning. In order to disentangle the complex range of available information, it is useful to consider research findings under several headings.
