Abstract
The topic of behavioural control or ‘behaviour modification’ is one which is always likely to inflame passions both amongst the lay public and professional groups. When this occurs, it is often obvious that complainants and critics are not well informed about the aims, rationale and techniques which are used. In this chapter, Reg Beech provides an introduction to all of these aspects of behaviour therapy. It is based on extensive clinical experience and is also tempered by a sincere concern for clients and a clear awareness that behavioural techniques have a number of limitations.
