Abstract
Measurement, precise objective measurement, has long been an aim of intellectual pursuits aspiring to scientific status. This book is concerned with one of the most controversial types of measurement carried on in technologically advanced societies — mental measurement or psychometrics. We have focused our attention primarily, although not exclusively, on that sphere of mental measurement where psychometricians have been at greatest pains to establish their scientific status, and where this status has been most fiercely contested — the measurement of intelligence.
