Abstract

‘The metaphor I had long used for the state of sociology was the hollow frontier... The fact was that the centre was hollow. There was no central area of agreed upon intellectual organisation of the massively important but obvious and unexciting findings. In its absence consolidated growth could hardly be maintained’ (George Homans in I.C. Horowitz (ed.), Sociological Self-Images, 1967, p, 27).
