Abstract
Regardless of the uncertainties to be discussed later in this paper, it is quite certain that we must greatly increase world food production, and more especially agricultural production, since, as we shall see, it is no use counting on food of non-agricultural origin. The problem of hunger is one of extreme urgency in the world today, yet it would be wrong to try and solve it without reference to the long term. Mankind’s distant future must not be compromised by destruction of natural resources now, or by growing pollution due to efforts to increase agricultural production.
