Abstract
The current trend towards smaller families and deferred but compressed fertility is likely to continue. At the same time, greater tolerance towards different life-styles is developing. This should include childlessness by choice on the part of those who place a premium on personal independence, or on freedom from a permanent commitment to another person (whether the sexual partner or a dependent child) or on a demanding, fulfilling career.
