Towards Teleliteracy-2: Beginning Television Analysis and Introducing Television Concepts
This chapter describes a number of early steps in the analysis of television images, introduces such concepts as iconography, narrative structure, spectacle, genre and mediation, and raises in an explicit way questions of analytical methodology. It begins with pupil analyses of Top of the Pops and Gardeners’ World based upon the programmes’ iconography, and then describes exercises in which the title sequences of a number of television programmes were analysed. The concept of genre is then introduced and a unit of work on one of television’s simplest and most accessible genres, the television cartoon, is described, in which, inter alia, questions of narrative structure were explicitly raised. Finally, the range of questions to which television images may be subjected is explored with reference to the programme Young Scientists of the Year.
