The Site of Protein Synthesis: The Ribosome

Abstract

It has been known since the earliest studies on the biosynthesis of proteins that the ribosomal particles are the sites of protein synthesis in the cell. These nucleoprotein particles, present in every cell which carries out protein synthesis, vary somewhat in size but are of basically similar structural build-up in different organisms and fulfil the same function. They bring together the different components of the translation system, in the correct spatial arrangement and in the right conformation required for the highly specific interactions between these components. They bring about the formation of peptide bonds between the amino acids which are specified in the message.
