Abstract
All the genetic information for the whole organism is encoded in the DNA molecules of each cell. According to the Central Dogma, the first step in the expression of this information is the transfer of individual messages into RNA molecules which in turn can carry this information to the protein synthesising system. The messenger RNAs thus produced contain only one or a few cistrons, i.e. the copies of one or a few genes. They are synthesised according to the actual needs of the cell; different control mechanisms determine which genes will be expressed in a given cell at any one time. A flexible system is thus created; this is the basis of the high adaptability of microorganisms and of the differentiation in higher organisms.
