Abstract

In the contemporary world, the costs of economic growth have become a matter of great concern, and economists are expected to devote the most serious attention to them. We owe it to ourselves to respond to this challenge as best we can.

The translation is by Elizabeth Henderson. I am also indebted to A. Desrosières, G. Henry, C. Sautter and Y. Ullmo for their helpful advice during the preparation of the paper.
