Abstract

Because of their traditions of political radicalism and intransigence in the face of disapproving authority, students throughout the world have proved a more ready target for persecution, imprisonment and exile than most other sectors of society. The recent example of the Thai students is a case in point: over 3,000 students were reported arrested following the disturbances which accompanied the military seizure of power in 1976, and several hundred students held in detention without trial or transferred to ‘re-education centres’.
