Epidemiology and the Prevention of Cancer

  • Chapter
An Introduction to Cancer Medicine

Abstract

The prevention of cancer depends on the identification of carcinogenic agents, the detection of high risk groups and predisposing factors, and on a combination of screening techniques and public education. A multidisciplinary approach using the methodology of epidemiology, the advance in screening techniques and the utilisation of health education programmes is required. Various methods have been described for the prevention of cancer and they are reviewed in this chapter.
