Abstract
Cancer is an emotional word, a word associated with disease, death and dying. It is a word which strikes fear into the hearts of ordinary people because, for centuries, it has been associated with a mysterious illness with no known cause and no known cure. However, during the past 20 years the situation has been transformed; our understanding of the underlying disorder has improved enormously and effective treatments have been evolved for several kinds of cancer.
