Abstract
Before commencing this narrative, it might be appropriate to set down a number of principles by which I have sought to guide my conduct. The first was well expressed by Lord Milner in 1909, when he said:
If we believe a thing to be bad, and if we have a right to prevent it, it is our duty to try to prevent it and to damn the consequences.
We shall this day light such a candle by God’s grace in England as, I trust, shall never be put out.
