Abstract

The control of a process or system may be achieved either in open loop or in closed loop and the concepts of both were discussed in the introductory chapter. Before going on to consider control-system representation, it is necessary to quantify the differences between open-loop and closed-loop control; to this end, consider the control of the boiler steam pressure in a boiler-turbine unit delivering electrical power to the grid system, shown diagrammatically in figure 4.1.
