In Chapter II we calculated the interaction between various survival rates and specific fertilities, and the average rates of population growth ensuing. These results should now be compared with the available evidence (there is much less than might have been supposed) about actual observed rates of population growth, present or past, under conditions of high specific fertility and low survival.
