Abstract

Rice is the staple food of the poor of the world. Not all of them depend upon it, of course, but it represents more than half the food of one-third of mankind, 1300 million people; another 400 million have it as an important part of their diets. And the people who depend primarily on rice enjoy an average annual income of only $80.
